Dev-Team Finds Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 [video]

MuscleNerd, a member of the Dev-Team, recently tweeted that they have untethered the jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1. The jailbreak will cover all devices. There is no info about a release date but we will keep our eyes open! I can’t wait! Below is a demo video and what MuscleNerd has to say about it.

Got “backup plan” for untethered 4.2.1 JB working (video coming up). Uses mysterious 4.2b3 hashes Cydia kept for you. (It’s a “backup plan” because comex is working on a more extensible one, but this method is also generalizable)

Dev-Team Releases PwnageTool for iPhone 3GS

The Dev-Team has made a few more updates to their post announcing the redsn0w unlock for iOS 4.2.1. One of the updates includes an unofficial PwnageTool bundle for the iPhone 3GS. This update is specifically for people with the iPhone 3GS who would like to upgrade to iOS 4.2.1 but want to keep their current baseband.

Update #3: For those Mac users with an old-bootrom 3GS who really know what they’re doing, here’s a minimal 3GS 4.2.1 bundle that will get you to 4.2.1 without updating your baseband. Be sure to uncheck “Activate the iPhone” using Expert mode. To actually jailbreak after you’ve restored with the help of that bundle, please use redsn0w. If you don’t know how to drop a bundle into PwnageTool.app, please hold off on 4.2.1 until it’s untethered for everyone

What a “Tethered” Jailbreak Means for iOS 4.2.1

As I mentioned yesterday, the current redsn0w jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 is currently still a tethered jailbreak for some devices. The Dev-Team has updated their recent post on jailbreaking iOS 4.2.1 with a definition of what a tethered jailbreak means. A great idea! Dev-Team Updates About iOS 4.2.1 – Including New Version of redsn0w Jailbreak

The Dev-Team has updated their blog with information about iOS 4.2.1. The first thing to note is that ultrasn0w unlockers should not upgrade to iOS 4.2.1 (read below for more info). The second bit of info is that they have updated redsn0w to version 0.9.6b4 which jaibreaks iOS 4.2.1 however, you will want to read all the info below because some devices are still a tethered jailbreak. redsn0w is available for both the Mac and PC (links below).

Dev-Team Releases New Version of redsn0w – Jailbreaks 4.2.1

Yesterday, the Dev-Team updated redsn0w. The update allows the ability to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 as well as install custom bundles. However, it is not compatible with the new version of Cydia and is still a tethered jailbreak for some devices. This jailbreak is created for people who are comfortable with the jailbreak process. Make sure you read all of the Dev-Teams info (below) before you give it a shot.

Upgrade to 4.2 on Any Device Early & Jailbreak

Apple has released the new version of firmware for all devices (besides first generations of course), version 4.2, to developers. The final, gold master file is ready. This means it will install even if you’re not a developer. This is the firmware that brings folders and backgrounding to the iPad and printing to all devices! The firmware will probably be out officially from Apple via iTunes within a week or so but if you want it early, follow the directions below. If you want to jailbreak, see the instructions following the update instructions.

As of the writing of this article, Cydia isn’t ready for 4.2 and I’m also not sure that this will work on the iPad for sure. Please correct me on this. The dev team blog says to point redsn0w at firmware 4.1. The iPhone runs 4.1 but not the iPad. You may be able to point it a previous iPad firmware but I haven’t tested this yet. I’m honestly waiting to jailbreak myself once Cydia is ready. We will update this article once we can confirm. I recommend syncing your device before starting this. [Read more…]

SHAtter Jailbreak – Tethered or untether that is the question.

Ok ok… it seems there is quite a bit of speculation going around as to what the SHAtter jailbreak is… tethered or untethered. (For those of your who are still catching up… SHAtter is the name of the jailbreak the Chronic Dev Team is currently working on for iOS 4.1). It seems that there is a bit of confusion. New Jailbreak Exploit Working for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch 4G

Dev-Team Yesterday, @MuscledNerd (a Dev-Team member) tweeted that @pod2G had found a jailbreak exploit. Today MuscleNerd went on to say “tweet” that the exploit works on iOS 4.1. He also mentioned that the exploit not only works on the iPhone 4 but also the iPad and the iPod touch 4. So… hopefully we are getting closer to a jailbreak! @pod2g tweeted that there will be a demo available soon (which I was trying to hold out for) but I haven’t seen it yet. They did however post a wiki page for “SHAtter” – which I’m assuming is the name of the jailbreak. [Read more…]

Easy Jailbreak Coming Soon For iPhone 4 & All Devices

Dev TeamThe dev team has been tweeting lots of good news lately. What does all of this mean? It pretty much means the jailbreak is figured out and now they are making a simple little program for all of us to run to get it done. Once it’s out we’ll let you know. I still plan on jailbreaking my iPhone 4. Mostly to get rid of the pop ups from text messages. And I love the weather in my status bar.

GeoHot Has Another Jailbreak Ready

GeoHot was recently doing a presentation at a conference and talked all about the iPhone exploits. Be ready, he goes into some great detail about it but here’s the key phrase:

“There is also, I hinted to this a couple times, an unreleased exploit in every iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in the bootrom to get code execution. And you know if I ever do another jailbreak, that’s the exploit I have. If you’ve seen I posted like a picture of 4.0 jailbroken. I posted my iPad jailbroken. All before Spirit was released. And I used like a completely different set of exploits which maybe when iPhone 4 comes out will be out.”

Instructions and Video Demo of Spirit Jailbreak for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad

SpiritThe Spirit jailbreak is a very quick and easy jailbreak. It can jailbreak all devices including all versions of the iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad. It can jailbreak devices on firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 3.2. This is not an unlock, so do not use this jailbreak if you want to keep your iPhone unlocked. Below are step-by-step instructions and a video tutorial on how to use the jailbreak.

NOTE: The first time we tested the Spirit jailbreak, it was with a device that was restored from a backup and we got the SWOD. However, when we tested the jailbreak again using a device with a clean restore (not from a backup) it worked perfectly.
