9 New iPhone Car Mounts

Arkon will be releasing 9 new iPhone car mounts in September. The sweet thing is they will work for both 1st Gen iPhones and the iPhone 3G. There is a windshield suction mount, cup holder mount, removable air vent mount, bicycle handlebar mount, sun visor mount, friction dash mounts (aka “bean bag mounts), passenger side seat bolt floor mount, and a multi angle adhesive dash mount.

The hardest part will be choosing from them all and that’s why we’re working with Arkon to get you reviews of all of them. That way you’ll know what works for you. I’m pretty excited about the bicycle mount. I’ve been riding my bike to work everyday and it would be sweet to use some of the navaigtaion apps like Speed. [Read more…]

QuickPwn GUI for 2.0.2 Firmware

We recently upgraded Brooke’s iPhone to 2.0.2 firmware. I’ve been waiting for the best way to jailbreak it for Windows. QuickPwn GUI is now availble for 2.0.2 firmware so I thought I would give it a shot. It’s very easy to use. You just follow the steps it gives you. This will jailbreak your iPhone but will not unlock the 3G yet. It will add Cydia and Installer without the need to restore your firmware. The Dev Team says the mac version is coming soon. Read more from them at blog.iphone-dev.org.

More WinPwn 2.5 Previews

Looks like WinPwn 2.5 will be here soon. WinPwn is the Windows version of PwnageTool for Mac. It jailbreaks your iPhone or iPod Touch and also unlocks 1st Gen iPhones. So far it’s not available for download yet but it will support firmware 2.0.2. Here’s some feature notes and screenshots:

Open Source Solution for Copy & Paste

openclipApple has slacked on the copy and paste feature for the iPhone. One app, MagicPad, made it available but it only worked within itself. Now, Zac White figured out how to implement copy and paste on any iPhone App without violating the iPhone SDK agreement. It’s called OpenClip and developers can add it to any app. Since it’s open source it could be added to both App Store and Jailbroken apps. Cali Lewis from GeekBrief.tv shows a demo of it on her latest show. She also has an audio only interview with Zac here:

Apple Logo Light Mod

This is a sweet hack if I’ve ever seen one! I would love to have this on my 3G! So far this info is only for the 1st Gen iPhone. Below is a video of the end result (warning, not in English). It makes your Apple logo glow! I checked a little deeper and found out they are a company in Russia and it’s actually running separate from the light from the screen (battery drain?). They also provide custom designed backs, memory upgrades, and laser engraving. Now only if this was maybe a flash for the camera, flashlight, changed color, interacted with apps… Tell us what your ideas are!

Dock – Ported to Firmware 2.0

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

DockDock was one of my all time favorite application for a long time on firmware 1.1.4 and below! I ended up uninstalling it when it interfered with a few other apps. But, Dock is back and has a whole new look! For those of you who are not familiar with Dock…it is an application launching application. It it’s old version, it also allowed you to take screen shots. After you install Dock on your 2.0 firmware, you will need to restart your iPhone or iPod Touch. But, one it is installed and you have restarted your device, you can activate Dock by slowing running your finger along the bottom of your screen….below your dock at the very edge of your screen. You must keep your finger on the screen to keep Dock launched

You will then get a menu with five options; Media, Phone, Uncategorized, Utilities and Work. You can drag your finger along your screen to switch between the categories. Each category then contains applications. To see the applications in each category, [Read more…]

GUI Version of QuickPwn

It seems there is a new GUI version of QuickPwn available. QuickPwn is still in beta but, at least it has a nice interface now! Below is what the Dev Team has to say. Let us know in the comments if you have used QuickPwn and what you think. Also, their website still advises to stay on firmware 2.0.1 though, we have heard of people jailbreaking 2.0.2 using QuickPwn.

“poorlad” has stepped up and created a GUI version of QuickPwn based on our Windows release earlier, this is a stopgap solution that he created in a little over 5 hours, great stuff poorlad!

It is available for download here but beware this is still beta software, it is fairly self explanatory and easy to use. You’ll still see a command-line window popping up when the actual QuickPwn process takes place, but the device and ipsw selection is handled by the GUI.

A final cross platform GUI for QuickPwn is also being developed, but this version should help some of you guys and gals right now.

Firmware 2.0.2 (UPDATED)

AppleSorry to get this out a little late (came out yesterday). iPhone firmware 2.0.2 was released yesterday. The official info is “bug fixes” but many claim it is to increase 3G reception. Unfortunately we do not have 3G available here so we can’t test it but if you watch this video you’ll see it is faster. Let us know your experience. I recently upgraded to 2.0.1 (jailbroken) and my keyboard and contacts experience isn’t much better. Hopefully this will help. Right now 2.0.2 has not been jailbroken but look for it soon. Thanks for all who tipped us on this!

UPDATE: Readers are reporting that QuickPwn will jailbreak 2.0.2. We will be testing this on Brooke’s iPhone 3G. Note that the Dev Team has not released any info stating 2.0.2 is jailbroke although it seems to be working…

WbApp 0.32

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

The update to version 0.32 of WbApp, A WinterBoard theme displaying/modding application, makes a few changes to the application. There is now a Tap for Info option which gives you basic info on how to use the application. I also noticed that if a Theme uses a web page wallpaper, instead of just displaying a blank screen when you select the theme, it now says, “This theme uses a web page wallpaper and has no preview (coming soon…).” Other than that, there are no new options in the options menu and the application functions the same as in the previous version. BossPrefs 2.12b

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

BossPrefs There have been a few updates to BossPrefs since the last time I did a review of the application. Most of the updates have been bug fixes or behind the scenes changes. However, version 2.12b of BossPrefs does add a new option. In the More section, you now have the option to Disable Apple App Killswitch. The Apple App Killswitch is referring to the ability in which Apple has to actually take an app right off your iPhone…like yours personally! Crazy! Well, BossPrefs [Read more…]

PhoneZap 1.5

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

PhoneZap It seems the PhoneZap, a photo sharing/networking application, has made it’s way into Cydia for firmware 2.0. PhoneZap is also going to be available via Installer and the AppStore in the coming days. It application itself functions much the same as the previous version however, it does not have the Ringtones option (though they say this will be added in the next week or so). The Post and Preferences options are basically the same as in the previous version. The Messages option has changed a little and is now divided into Messages and Comments…which makes it a lot neater. I also noticed that you can now view images based on Countries, which was not an option the last time I did a reivew of this application. Other than that, the app is very similar to the 1.1.4 and below version of the application. The only issue I am having with the application is that [Read more…]

QuickPwn – A “New” Beta Jailbreak Method for Windows Users

Dev TeamIt seems the DevTeam has released a quick jailbreak method for Windows users. QuickPwn is still in beta but, it seems to be proof of concept that makes pwning and jailbreaking your iPhone or iPod Touch much quicker. Basically you are able to jailbreak without creating a full IPSW. After taking a look at it, there isn’t much of a user interface at this time and it seems that you can only use it if you are on firmware 2.0.1 (be sure to read the README file). But, if you are into trying the newest hack…you may want to give it a shot. Below is a snippet from the DevTeam’s blog.

We’ve got something for you! (No, it’s not the 3G unlock, but still something very useful.)

It’s a tool we’ve been working on to jailbreak a phone more quickly and easily, without requiring a full restore. Unless you are making a custom firmware with specific features, there is nothing inherent in the pwnage process that requires a restore, and we have been planning this tool for some time. It’s more convenient because you do not need to make a full IPSW and use iTunes with it, but your phone still ends up pwned and jailbroken.

In an attempt to be more open about our development process, we’re releasing a beta version of quickpwn, for Windows only. Other platforms are coming soon.

WhatIP 1.0.0-1

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WhatIP I am sooo glad that we finally have an application like this for firmware 2.0!! WhatIP is a simple application that displays your local IP address. When you tap on the application icon, the app will find your IP address and display it in the middle of the screen. There is also a refresh option in the upper right hand corner. One of these types of apps is a must have on my iPhone! It is so much easier to just open an application and get your IP address then to go into your Settings, select WiFi, wait for it to find all the available WiFi connections, select the WiFi you are connected to, wait for it to load all the info and then finally get your IP address! If you do a lot of SSHing into your iPhone, [Read more…]

Illuminated – WinterBoard Theme

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard Illuminated is a WinterBoard theme available via Cydia. This is one of Doug’s favorites themes. It is similar to the Time of Day theme that I wrote about a few days ago. Illuminated also changes your wallpaper based on what time is it. However, I actually like the look of this theme a little more than the Time of Day theme and it changes more often. In the Illuminated theme, there are eight wallpapers which means they change every three hours. The wallpapers represent the time of day, displaying a sun or moon that moves around your iPhone or iPod Touch’s screen. See screenshots below.
