New iPhone 3.0 Firmware Preview From Apple Next Tuesday

AppleMany sites are posting about Apple doing a preview of the iPhone 3.0 firmware next Tuesday. Of course there are all kinds of ideas about what they will be announcing. I’m really waiting for the notification system that functions kinda like a SMS message that developers can use to push notifications to your iPhone. Examples like AIM message notifications, Ebay outbid notices, Twitter updates, News & Sports Scores Alerts, Woot-Offs, Weather Alerts, etc. This will bring the iPhone to another level.

Other major features that really should have never been left out are things like MMS (Picture Messaging) & Copy and Paste. We’ll make sure we stay on top of it and keep you up today on the latest rumors and actual announcements coming March 17th. And of course this might all be leading up to the 3rd iPhone :)

QuickFreedom – iPod Touch 2nd Generation Untethered Jailbreak Tutorial

Ok, so we’ve been busy for a few days but we’re home from the hospital and I just received a tweet that a friend of a friend just jailbroke his iPod Touch 2nd Gen using this guide without tethering! How sweet is that! So props goes to @sethreineke for sending me the tweet and @ericjd for testing it out. I’ve also checked online and haven’t found any risk or problems with this app. This guide only works with windows. Let us know if you have a Mac solution.

NOTE: Untethered means you do not have to have the cable hooked to your iPod and computer. The previous test versions required this but is no longer needed!

Dolce & Gabbana Theme

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard dolcegabbanatheme2 This theme, Dolce & Gabbana (which is apparently a clothing line…who knew!), is a simple black and white theme that is based off the A8stract theme’s icons (which happens to be one of my favorite themes!). The theme doesn’t contain a lot of mods just a wallpaper, dock and icons. The theme actually contains two wallpapers in which it scrolls through. I personally did not like the wallpapers so I chose User Wallpaper in WinterBoard (and moved it above the theme) and then just used a black wallpaper behind the icons.

No Calendar Date – Removes Date From Calendar Icon

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

No Calendar Date The No Calendar Date application is a mod that will remove the date from the calendar icon on your SpringBoard. As the developer mentions in the More Info, this is nice for themes that have smaller icons…most likely for those of you using the FiveIrows mod or the FCSB mod.

When you install the No Calendar Date application, it will be added into WinterBoard where it can then be activated/deactivated. In order for it to display correctly, you will want to move it above your theme in the WinterBoard list. Screenshots below.

Video: Bluetooth Keyboard Working on the iPhone

##ICON_NAME##Just saw this over at iPhoneFreakz.com and thought I’d share it with you. This would be pretty sweet although I don’t think I’d use such a big bluetooth keyboard :) No word on when it will be released.

On a side note, you won’t really need a bluetooth keyboard if this is ever released: [Read more…]

Tecnicolor WinterBoard Theme

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Tecnicolor tecnicolortheme3 Tecnicolor is a WinterBoard theme available via the the modmyi source. When you install Tecnicolor, you will see three themes added to WinterBoard; Tecnicolor iPod Edition, Tecnicolor Lite and Tecnicolor. The Tecnicolor Lite theme basically only includes a StatusBar, Dock and Icons. The Tecnicolor theme includes a few other mods such as a wallpaper, lock background, badges…etc.

This theme does require the Five Icon Dock mod and some rearranging of icons. You will need to put the following icons on your dock (in this order) in order for the theme to work correctly; Contacts, SMS, Phone, Mail and iPod.

Dismiss Away Items Update & New Quick Dimiss Application

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Quick Dimiss Yesterday there was an update to Dismiss Away Items, a application that allows you to dismiss alerts pop-ups by tapping the Home Button. The update changed the app so that it only works for dismissing alert pop-ups on your lock screen (instead of on your lock screen, SpringBoard and while in an application). However, the developer also released an additional application titled Quick Dismiss. When installed, it allows you to dismiss alert pop-ups using the Home Button while on your SpringBoard and while in applications. So basically, the developer turned Dismiss Away Items into two applications.

However, the first release of Quick Dismiss did not work so, I patiently waited for an update which came out this afternoon and the application now works correctly. Make sure you have version 1.1.0 of Quick Dismiss.

Cydia Store Now Open!

CydiaAfter a long night, the Cydia Store is now open! Just to clear some things up, the Cydia Store is not a different application. It’s just an update to the current Cydia App. For those of you who do not know what I’m talking about, you will need to jailbreak your iPhone to get Cydia. It was also expected to be released last night but took a little longer than expected. Here’s some of the updates from the developer through the night and this morning that give out more details: [Read more…]

Cydia Store Launching “Tonight”

CydiaAccording to a recent tweet from @Saurik, “Tonight (late) a new Cydia will come out with one package “for sale” (more over the next week): more details will be in Cydia.” This is also confirmed in an article from the Wall Street Journal that talks about the drama of Apple trying to call jailbreaking the iPhone illegal. I personally do not think it’s illegal to jailbreak the iPhone. The iPhone is a computer running OS X. Just like my iMac, I can install whatever I want on it. [Read more…]

Brick Avoid

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Brick Avoid Brick Avoid was actually released earlier this week however, when I went to test it, I thought it was broken. I expected to see an update for the app but, I never did. Well, this morning, my 2 year old son showed me that it indeed was not broken just user error! When you open the application, you will get a loading screen in which you need to tap to continue into the application. You will then get another “loading” screen in which you also have to tap to get to the main menu of the application.

On the main menu you have the options; Start Game, Settings, HighScores, About and Quit. The Setting and HighScores options are not available at this time. Once you have selected Start Game, the game will begin when you tap and hold on the little guy. You then need to continue to hold the guy as you move him around the screen to avoid being hit by the bricks. Once you are hit by a brick, you will get a screen displaying how long you were able to avoid being hit.

Dismiss Away Items – Dismiss Alert Pop-ups

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Dismiss Away Items Dismiss Away Items is a mod that allows you to dismiss alerts by tapping the Home Button. Once installed, you are able to dismiss the pop-ups for missed SMS alerts, missed call alerts, missed voicemail alerts…etc…just by tapping your Home Button. In the app description it says that this works on the lockscreen (which it does) however, it also works if you are on your SpringBoard or in an application. The nice thing about this mod is that it still displays a missed alert badge even though you have dismissed the pop-up (ex. still leaves a badge number on your SMS icon or Phone icon).

If you are not currently using an application, like IntelliScreen, to block your alert pop-ups this might be a mod for you. I personally do not use an alert blocker (unlike Doug who uses IntelliScreen) so, this mod works great for me…I can read the alert and then dismiss it without having to go off my lockscreen.

WeatherIcon Mod Updates 1.9.1 and 1.9.2

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WeatherIcon I was excited to see the update to the WeatherIcon mod last night…the updated boasted improved battery performance, memory improvements, fixing the Safe Mode issue and better rendering of the status bar icons…all of which I was very excited about!! So, I updated the app last night and instantly encountered a few problems. After updating, all I would get was a ? on my status bar and my weather icon. I restarted my iPhone and then waited a bit and the ? did eventually go away (though, it continued to come back randomly throughout the night). Well, it seems this was fixed with another update to the app this morning! Which, so far, has seemed to fix the problem. However, I am still having a few other issues.

Full Status Bar

AiS For the first time since enabling the WeatherIcon status bar icon mod…I actually needed more space on my status bar! This past week-end, I noticed that I had a new email icon, a missed phone call icon, a missed text icon, a silence icon, the weather temp icon, the weather type icon and the battery icon all on my status bar. I also noticed that my silence icon was overlapping the time on my status bar because I had run out of room to the right of it! Last month…I wrote an article about a mod called No Clock. This mod actually removes the clock off your status bar. So, I gave it a shot. It worked…I could see all my notification icons on my status bar but, I missed having the clock!
