Upgrade to 4.2 on Any Device Early & Jailbreak

Apple has released the new version of firmware for all devices (besides first generations of course), version 4.2, to developers. The final, gold master file is ready. This means it will install even if you’re not a developer. This is the firmware that brings folders and backgrounding to the iPad and printing to all devices! The firmware will probably be out officially from Apple via iTunes within a week or so but if you want it early, follow the directions below. If you want to jailbreak, see the instructions following the update instructions.

As of the writing of this article, Cydia isn’t ready for 4.2 and I’m also not sure that this will work on the iPad for sure. Please correct me on this. The dev team blog says to point redsn0w at firmware 4.1. The iPhone runs 4.1 but not the iPad. You may be able to point it a previous iPad firmware but I haven’t tested this yet. I’m honestly waiting to jailbreak myself once Cydia is ready. We will update this article once we can confirm. I recommend syncing your device before starting this. [Read more…]

Ragdoll Blaster 2 – Free For Limited Time

For a limited time, Ragdoll Blaster 2 is free for the iPhone and iPod touch. The developers are trying to promote the new version of the app for the iPad ($4.99). This game is really addicting and has 4 1/2 stars in the App Store. It comes with over 150 levels and there is some great creativity in the designing of some of these levels. I definitely recommend downloading this game. [Read more…]

iFixit’s iPod Touch 4th Generation Teardown (No Vibrate Motor)

iFixit Today iFixit released a teardown guide for the 4th Generation iPod touch. Yesterday in episode 18 of i101 we had mentioned that, according to Apple’s website, the 4th gen iPod touch was going to have a vibrate alert. Today that information is no longer on Apple’s website. It seems that Apple made a slight mistake saying that the 4th gen iPod touch would have a vibrate feature. This was further confirmed by iFixit’s teardown of the device in which they did not find a vibrate motor. Bummer Apple. You can view iFixit’s complete teardown guide HERE.

Save iPhone 3GS, 3rd Gen iPod touch or iPad SHSH Using Windows

AutoSHSHWhen Apple releases a new firmware they don’t like people using older firmware. Sometimes jailbreaking new firmware takes a while and if you ever need to restore to your older firmware it won’t work unless you have your SHSH info. This only applies to the iPhone 3GS, 3rd Gen iPod touch and iPad because they all have a ECID in them which stands for “Exclusive Chip ID”. So, to restore to an older firmware you need the SHSH info for that info and for your device. To backup this info from your device there is a sweet little program called AutoSHSH. This is a Windows only program.

Once downloaded just follow these easy steps:
1. Open iTunes
2. Connect your device to the computer via USB

Mophie Juice Pack Air for iPod touch

##ICON_NAME## Mophie is soon releasing the popular Juice Pack Air for the iPod touch. The Juice Pack Air is the thinner, newer model extra battery and case combo from Mophie. This should be a pretty popular accessory for iPod touch owners. Everytime I am using mine and a friend with an iPod touch sees it they try to fit their iPod touch in it and then ask if they make one. I really like mine for the iPhone and would reccomend this for any iPhone or iPod touch user. There is no release date as of now; their website just says coming soon. It is priced at $79.95 and comes in black, blue and red.

QuickFreedom – iPod Touch 2nd Generation Untethered Jailbreak Tutorial

Ok, so we’ve been busy for a few days but we’re home from the hospital and I just received a tweet that a friend of a friend just jailbroke his iPod Touch 2nd Gen using this guide without tethering! How sweet is that! So props goes to @sethreineke for sending me the tweet and @ericjd for testing it out. I’ve also checked online and haven’t found any risk or problems with this app. This guide only works with windows. Let us know if you have a Mac solution.

NOTE: Untethered means you do not have to have the cable hooked to your iPod and computer. The previous test versions required this but is no longer needed!

redsn0w – Jailbreak for iPod Touch 2G (2nd Generation) Video

The Dev Team, specifically MuscleNerd, has released a video via qik.com of a jailbroken iPod Touch 2G (2nd Generation). Unfortunatly the jailbreak only works when tethered (connected via USB) to a computer. They are working on a fix for this but have proven the jailbreak to work by running terminal, Cydia and an NES Emulator (Nintendo). Let us know if the comments if you have an iPod Touch 2G waiting to jailbreak. Here’s the video:

September 9th, 2008 Keynote – New iPod Touch

New iPod Touch

AppleApple announced the release of the new iPod Touch today. They are now shaped more like the iPhone with the curved back but are made out of stainless steel instead of plastic like the iPhone. They also come with volume control buttons which goes along nicely with the new internal speakers.

Another huge feature for the iPod Touch is Nike+ integration. Nike+ is a combination of a sensor on your Nike shoes and software on the iPod that integrates your running and music.

8GB, $229, 16GB for $299, and a 32GB for $399

This all means no GPS, no microphone, no camera, no bluetooth…

Let’s Rock Wish List

appleApple is having a huge event at at 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday. There are rumors from new Nanos, MacBooks, the longed for tablet and even an update to Apple TV with an HD Tuner, Blueray and DVR (yeah right). We’re gonna stick to the iPhone and iPod here which is still a lot of info.

So far rumors include firmware 2.1. What will this include? Copy and Paste? Background notification service such as instant messaging we’ve seen in previewed in other keynotes. The iPhone itself most likely won’t get any upgrades. If anything it would be colors or capacity changes. The big deal is probably the iPod Touch. Changing to a look like the iPhone and adding a couple features like external speakers or mic is my guess. I’d also hope for a camera, GPS, Bluetooth, volume controls, etc, just like the iPhone. Basically and iPhone without the Phone. I know this would be huge! I know a couple friends that bought the 1st Gen iPhone just to jailbreak it and use it without service to get the camera, mic, speakers, etc. [Read more…]

iPod Touch Rumors

– iPod touch 2.1 software, iPhone to get update very soon after.
– iTunes 8.0 (“it’s a big update w/new features”).
– All of this coming in the next 2-3 weeks.

iPod Touch Discounts (refurbished)

Rumors are, Apple is trying to dump stock of iPod Touches to get ready for a newer version. What will the new version bring? Larger storage, microphone, speaker, camera, GPS? The refurbished prices are $199 for an 8GB, $299 for a 16GB, and $429 for a 32GB. You can pick one up at Apple’s Website.

If you want more than just a rumor, many iPhone news sites are reporting the new 2.1 firmware has referance to the iPod Touch as “iPod2,1”. Currently it’s refferenced to as “iPod1,1”. Even better, the iPhone 1st Gen was referenced to as “iPhone1,1” and is now “iPhone1,2” for the iPhone 3G. You can see it was the second number that changed. With the Touch it’s the first number that changes. Let us know what you think all of this means in the comments.
