Un-Unlockable – Slide to Unlock Mod

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard I noticed a pretty cool mod today in Cydia called Un-Unlockable through the ModMyi source. What the mod does is make your “Slide to Unlock” transparent. This means that it will not show up on your lock screen. Instead, you still just see your wallpaper on your lock screen. The “Slide to Unlock” is still there and you still have to slide to unlock your iPhone…you just cannot see it. The first time I locked my iPhone after installing this mod, I panicked a little…I was like, crap it’s gone now what do I do!! But, like anyone who has had an iPhone for a while and uses it everyday, my finger knew exactly where to slide even without having the “Slide to Unlock” prompt. Though, it would definitely keep people out of your iPhone who do not know how to use one!!

Once you have installed Un-Unlockable, [Read more…]

2.0 and 2.0.1 Troubleshooting

BigBoss BigBoss has written a nice article that gives a lot of 2.0/2.0.1 troubleshooting hints and tips. Below is a snippet of the article.

Many comments on various issues in 2.0 or 2.0.1 upgrades. Many questions have been answered numerous times. I am adding a summary of a lot of the problems and solutions in this post for reference. I can also update it over time if we need it.

Problem: Mail App crashes after my update.
Solution: This is caused by the sync of the backup from iTunes. The permissions on the mail folder are incorrect (it’s owned by root). The easiest fix is to run bossprefs, click more, and click “fix user dir permissions”. You may need to reboot.

Customize 2.1.1

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Customize I finally had a chance to sit down and take a look at the new Customize for firmware 2.0. At this time, it is still not available via Cydia and the only way to get it on your iPhone or iPod Touch is to SSH it in Customize is now available via Cydia. When I SSH’d Customize onto my iPhone, I had to go in and change the permissions of all the folders/files inside the Customize.app folder to 0755. Before I change the permissions the app just opened and closed (I tried to open it quite a few times before I changed the permissions).

So, once I changed the permissions, I was able to open Customize. From there I downloaded a few files and some themes. However, [Read more…]

MxTube 2.0 available soon!

MxTube Every once and a while we still get random emails asking us what ever happened to MxTube 2.0, a YouTube video downloader. Well, ever since we first learned that the developer of MxTube was working on MxTube 2.0, I have been keeping a close eye on his blog and it seems he is finishing up the development of MxTube 2.0 and we should see it in the next few days!

Below is some info about MxTube 2.0 via the developer. Check out our post on MxTube for more info about the app.

WinPwn Getting Closer

Well, according to guys over at Winpwn.com they are testing the latest version of WinPwn and we should see a release soon! Maybe the next couple of days?! Hold tight…we are almost there.

Installer 4.0 Update

InstallerEven though the jailbreak for firmware 2.0 is now available, if you choose to upgrade and jailbreak…you will not see much. The only thing available in the jailbreak is Cydia with a few applications like OpenSSH. You will not even see Installer yet. Below is what the RiP Dev blog has to say about the progress of Installer 4.0.

As you surely know by now, Pwnage Tool 2.0 is out. And for now, it has no Installer 4.0 in it.

This is because we have decided to not release an undertested product into the wild – we don’t want any mess on the phone this time. So Installer 4.0 will come out soon… as soon as we’re confident it functions properly, we will release it – and trust us, we are not going to delay it for a long time.

Pwnage Tool Released

Pwnage has been released. We will be testing it shortly. This is only available for the Mac at this time. If you try it, let us know your results in the comments.

You can download it here from the dev team or the mirror from BigBoss here.

Here is a great guide from BigBoss

UPDATE: You will need the 2.0 firmware. Use the file you used to upgrade your iPhone to 2.0.

UPDATE 2: So far, not as easy as predicted. Only the 1st Gen iPhone is supported at this time for unlocking. If you’re looking for apps, they aren’t there yet. Installer isn’t even available. Cydia is but no apps yet. There is OpenSSH so you can dig into that if you want :) So, unless you are looking to unlock the 1st Gen iPhone with firmware 2.0, I would wait until Installer and some apps are ported over to 2.0.

UPDATE 3: A few bugs I see. First, you can’t run pwner unless you go through making the custom firmware. Let’s say you’re going to do a second iPhone. You have to go through the process again. If I’m wrong about this let me know. If your iPhone has been pwned before you don’t need to do it again.

UPDATE 4: I keep getting this error:2008-07-19 21:45:48 – Failed to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw file.

Update on What PwnageTool 2.0 will Support

Dev TeamThe Dev Team continues to keep us updated on their progress. They are still trying to work out a few bugs (scroll way down) but, they have posted a list on what PwnageTool 2.0 supports so far. It looks as though everything can be jailbroke and activated however, they do not have the iPhone 3G unlocked yet. Check it out:

So, currently (when released) PwnageTool 2.0 will support:-

    • iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 – Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).

    • iPod Touch with 2.0 – Activated & Jailbroken, (with support for third party applications).

    • iPhone (3G) with 2.0 – Activated, Jailbroken (with support for third party applications).

We’ve made some progress on the baseband unlock of the 3G device, but at this point PwnageTool will not support 3G unlocking or BootNeuter on the 3G device. It is, of course supported on the first generation device with 2.0. We’ll push out an update with 3G support if and when it is completed.

As soon as we fix this up and test a bit more we’ll be ready for release, we’ll get back to you with a release schedule soon.

Jailbreaking Firmware 2.0

firmware 2.0 We have had quite a few questions on what the deal is with jailbreaking firmware 2.0. Many of you are asking about the drama between YiPhone, ZiPhone and the Dev Team. All of which have been rumored to be creating a jailbreak for firmware 2.0. Honestly, I’m not big on drama…I will believe a jailbreak when I see it and have tested it. Until then, we will have to just wait!! Though, I hope it is soon…I really miss a ton of my Installer apps like; iPhoneHome, MIM, Kate, IntelliScreen, Customize, SummerBoard….the list goes on! Now, I just hope the apps can be rewritten to work with firmware 2.0 (why did I upgrade again?). :)

2.0 Firmware Unstable

2.0 Firmware I don’t know about you guys, but I am having quite a few issues with firmware 2.0. The App Store seems to crash one in every five times I use it (if not more), my iPhone locks up almost every time I get a text message pop-up while in a program, my iPhone randomly restarts and App Store apps constantly crash while using them. I do not seem to be the only one having these issues. Here at Apple iPhone School we have three iPhones and one iPod Touch on firmware 2.0 (the rest are still on jailbroke 1.1.4) and they are all having problems. Let me know in the comments what your experience with the 2.0 firmware as been like.

BootNeuter 2.0 Preview

Here is a video from the iphone-dev.org blog. It shows BootNeuter 2.0 running on a first generation iPhone upgraded to 2.0. This app helps in the unlocking process. It is not available at this time.

Screenshot Ability Built into 2.0 Firmware

Firmware 2.0 A few days ago, Doug and I were discussing how we were going to take screenshots on the applications we review, once we had upgraded to firmware 2.0. In the past, we used Capture…an application available through Installer on our jailbroken iPhones. However, firmware 2.0 has not been jailbroke yet, so we could no longer use Capture. Well, no worries, Apple has actually added the ability to take screenshots into the 2.0 firmware! To take a screenshot (a picture of what is on your iPhone’s screen), [Read more…]

Firmware 2.0 Link

AppleFirmware 2.0 is now available here. Once downloaded hold the shift key in iTunes and select the downloaded firmware. This will break your jailbreak or unlock. We are testing and will let you know how it goes. So far Gizmodo has loaded it successfully.

UPDATE: See comments below for updates.

UPDATE 2: We now have Firmware 2.0 working on Brooke’s iPhone. We have installed a few apps and all is working well!

You can also get it on our Firmware Page.

Features of the iPhone Firmware 2.0

20ss1 Whether you decide to update to firmware 2.0 or decide to stay with your jailbroken iPhone….lets go over what features 2.0 will bring.

Apple’s Description: “With the iPhone 2.0 Software Update, your iPhone will do even more. Extend its capabilities with innovative applications you download directly from the new App Store. Get push email, calendar, and contacts from your Microsoft Exchange server at work. And use great new features in Mail, Contacts, and other applications. Free in the next update.”

appstoreAppStore: For me, this will be the best feature of firmware 2.0. Though, if I weren’t purchasing an iPhone 3G (thus forced to update to 2.0) it might not warrant an upgrade…I really like my jailbroke iPhone!

Apple’s Description: “iPhone applications are unlike anything you’ve ever seen on a mobile phone. That’s because they leverage all the groundbreaking technologies in iPhone — like the accelerometer, Multi-Touch, 3D positional sound, and GPS. And they’re only a tap away at the App Store.”

What about the iPod Touch?

There is a lot of talk about the iPhone 3G today but what about the iPod Touch? Well we did learn that to upgrade your iPod Touch to the 2.0 firmware will be $9.95. I’m really surprised Apple is charging for this. This mean you’ll have to pay for the App Store and then pay for apps. I know there are other features but this is still not kewl. Luckily the price isn’t that bad and I’d be willing to pay for the upgrade. Speaking of the Touch, since we saved more than needed for an iPhone, we’ll be buying an iPod Touch so we can keep all of those who have them up-to-date on what new and old apps work on the Touch.
