Safe Mode

apple Today I was installing a few things through Cydia and all of a sudden my iPhone restarted. That in itself is not too weird but when my iPhone rebooted it booted into “Safe Mode.” I had never seen this before. I got a pop-up warning that said,

“Mobile Substrate Safe Mode. We apologize for the inconvenience, but SpringBoard has just crashed. A recent software installation, upgrade, or removal might have been the cause of this. Your device is now running in Safe Mode. All extensions that support this safety system are disabled. Reboot (or restart SpringBoard) to return to normal mode.” [Read more…]

New WinterBoard Themes

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

#WinterBoard Just yesterday I was writing that I couldn’t find a WinterBoard them that I liked and then voilà…today there is one! There are actually two that I am going to point out. One because it is unique the other because I set it as my theme!! I had a chance to look at a few of the themes you guys have suggested in my post from yesterday. Hopefully, I get a chance to look through all of them and do a post about the ones that are really cool!

Two of the themes that were released today are Crump and Vivid. Crump is definitely a unique theme, I have not seen one quite like it. Vivid is the theme I am currently using and it is a little more [Read more…]

Who is Hot? 1.2

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

Who is HotWho is Hot? has recently been updated so I thought I’d write about it. We did a little review of it on an iPhone 101 Episode but here’s a little more in depth review. First, I must tell you this is a weather app. I know the title may seem to suggest otherwise but this app has to do with temperature, not looks :) It takes all your contacts and based on their location, gives you their current temperature. With the previous version, this was based on address only but the new version also takes info from the first 6 numbers of your phone number, which includes the area code, to determine your location. Just remember that if you have a friend or family that has a cell phone from one city and has moved to another and kept their number this might make things less accurate. [Read more…]

Jailbreaking an iPhone 3G with 2.1 Firmware using a Mac

A friend stopped by the other night to lend us his MacBook Pro to jailbreak one of our iPhone 3Gs. Here’s a video:

Asphalt4: Elite Racing

Available In: App Store       Price: $9.99

Asphalt4: Elite Racing This is honestly, in my opinion, the best game in the App Store so far. It’s quality challenges even those of PlayStation One games, which is a break-thru for a game on a mobile device. This game is fairly popular not only on the iPhone, but other mobile devices as well, and have had access to this quadrilogy for years.

Once you open the app, a movie will play. Now it kinda exaggerates the game (it makes it look like a PS2 game!), but it does give attention to the game itself. When that is done, it loads and then brings you to the title screen. Tap the screen to begin your journey.

You first start out with a Mini-Cooper, and one race. There is a total of 28 vehicles and 48 races (with 12 cities). Win races to get money. Racing is really fun and there is three ways to race: [Read more…]

SwirlyMMS 1.2

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free Demo; $8.00 USD

##ICON_NAME## Hello iPhone People…that is supposed to be read like they say, “Hello Miami” like at concerts and what not. Ok, maybe that only happens in the movies anyway, moving on! It seems that SwirlyMMS, an app that allows multimedia text messaging, has finally made it’s way to the 2.0+ firmware…YAY!. This is very exciting for those of you who can use it! I’m still trying to find a way to get it to work with AT&T but, it does have a new icon!

When you open SwirlyMMS, it will default to the Inbox screen but will then take you to the info screen. On the info screen you will see the options Get Demo and and Arrow. In order to use the application, [Read more…]

GroceryZen

Available In: App Store       Price: $4.99

GroceryZenWe wrote about GroceryZen back in May and were very excited about this application. The application is now available in the App Store and we have not been disappointed. GroceryZen is a grocery list designed how all todo type apps should be… simple. There are three tabs across the bottom: Items, Recipes, and Shop.

Starting with the Item tab, you have a search bar and a list of all the possible items to add to your shopping list. There is also an alphabet scroll bar on the right to quickly scroll to an item. If you search for an item and it doesn’t show up in the list, you can select the plus button and permanently add it to the list of choices. This makes the app customizable and personal to you. Tapping an item adds it to your Shop list. If you’d like to change something about an item, tap the edit button and you can change the title, aisle or area it’s located in the store (this comes in later with the Shop Tab), quantity, and an “Add to recipes” button. Of course you can also delete an item when in edit mode by tapping the red minus button and then tapping delete. [Read more…]

So, here is a poll about it! :) Mine and Doug’s personal iPhones are on the newest 2.1 firmware (jailbroke) but we have a few test iPhones that are on lower firmwares!

The previous poll was – How are you currently getting apps onto your iPhone and/or iPod Touch (choose all that apply)? Below are the results based on when we added the poll just over a week ago.

* Installer (32%, 670 Votes)

I’m with the majority on this one. I’m all about Cydia and the App Store. You can still vote on this Poll in our Poll Archive page. You can also vote/view all the past polls on the Poll Archive page as well. Here is the new poll:

WinterBoard and Firmware 2.1

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoardThere seems to be some problems with WinterBoard and Firmware 2.1. The developer, saurik, is working on the issues and knowing his track record, it will be resolved soon so be patient. According to the info in Cydia under WinterBoard, here are the issues:

“Please note that the UIImages tool crashes on iPhoneOS 2.1. This issue is being examined (Apple completely changed how that cache works). Also, please note that your phone may “randomly” reboot about a minute after upgrading WinterBoard. I am also looking into this issue.”

Jailbreak for Firmware 2.1

The Dev Team has released their recent hack of Firmware 2.1. They have also claimed the rumors of iTunes 8 blocking the pwn is not true and there is still a way. So far, this hack uses QuickPwn and Pwnage tools for the Mac only. It’s not confirmed if it works on the new iPod Touch 2G as the Dev Team doesn’t have one yet.

NY Mets Winterboard Theme

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoardWell I was cruising along Cydia again when I saw something that made me pinch myself! Now, being born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, I am into baseball and a HUGE Mets fan. Well my dreams have finally come true: a NY Mets theme!

It’s a 1MB download, and has not that many icons (for now, only the base apps and some other apps like Cydia, Winterboard, Tap Tap, you know, the basic stuff). One thing I love about this app is the lock screen. The slider is a little sliding Met and you slide him all the way to a home plate to unlock the phone, which is so cool, I just had to point it out specifically! Too bad I can’t get a screenshot of it! :( Well its a good theme and still developing. [Read more…]

Winterboard Font Pack

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterboardToday in Cydia, a package in the Ste source was relaesed called ‘Winterboard Font Pack’. When you install it, it adds 19 professional fonts to your Winterboard database. What it does is it customizes the font of your springboard. Every app’s name on every page on your springboard will change to the font you select. This works perfectly and provides a nice variety of fonts that make your springboard even nicer that what it is. :) [Read more…]
