iPhone 101 – Episode 10

NOTE: In this video I said that 2.0.1 is not unlockable. That is not true. This was the case from earlier versions of pwnage but is now an option. So far, the iPhone 3G is not unlockable on any firmware.

Kate available in Installer 4.0

Available In: Installer       Price: $20.00-$45.00

Kate I was excited to see Kate was finally available for firmware 2.0 via the Installer. It is a public beta version of the application. I personally am a huge fan of Kate and really miss the features that I use it for. However, when I try to install the app, I get an error. The error says, “Failed script command on line 2: ChangeMode.” Then my iPhone crashed back to the SpringBoard. I was totally bummed…I was looking forward to checking it out. Let me know in the comments if you are getting the same error.

Update:: Below is a list of features that Kate 2.0b4 has. I do think that it is cool that if you previously registered the app, it will carry over to this version of Kate.

All Components:
    • First public beta for firmware 2.0. Can be installed from the repository http://i.ripdev.com/ using Installer 4.
    • All included components reworked to work under 2.0.x with the same functionality. We will expand on the featureset soon.
    • Existing subscriptions will work; you can also request a trial or check your subscription by visiting Settings > RiP Dev > RiP Dev Products preference pane.

WinterBoard 0.9.2520-2

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Winterboard The update to WinterBoard 0.9.2520-2 makes some significant changes to the how the application works. When you open WinterBoard you will notice that you now have the ability to move files around using the three bars to the right of the files. You can also choose more than one file. Now, here is where it can get a little tricky.

The files take priority based on which file comes first. So lets say you have added a few files to Winterboard and they include, a file that is a transparent dock, a file that is a pink status bar and a file with your favorite theme. If you choose your theme file but, your theme doesn’t have a transparent dock and you prefer if it does, you can choose both the transparent dock file and the theme files. You would then move the transparent dock file before your theme file. That way the transparent dock would overwrite the dock that come with the theme.

Stylem Greetings

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

StylemStylem is an application that allows you to send custom greetings via email. When you open the application, you will get the main page. Here you will seen three categories on the lower menu bar; Popular, Recent and Categories. The app defaults to the Popular category. If you select the Categories option you will get quite a few options such as; Love, Friends, Happy Birthday, Thinking Of You, Congratulations….etc. Once you select a category it will bring you back to the main screen as it loads the available images for that category. It is a little slow on Edge but if you have 3G or are on WiFi most of the time…it is no problem. You can scroll through the available images by using the arrows buttons. The Home button will bring you back to the first page of the images. [Read more…]

Beijing 2008 Medal Tracker

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

Beijing 2008Beijing 2008 Medal Tracker is as simple as the title suggests. It tracks the top 5 couries in Olympic medals. You can also set your favorite team to track at the bottom. The biggest downfall of this app is the cost. At $1.99, this app is only good for 14 days, then the Olympics are over. I vote pass on this one and check my earlier review of iOlympics the web app or try SportsTap from the App Store.

2.0 and 2.0.1 Troubleshooting

BigBoss BigBoss has written a nice article that gives a lot of 2.0/2.0.1 troubleshooting hints and tips. Below is a snippet of the article.

Many comments on various issues in 2.0 or 2.0.1 upgrades. Many questions have been answered numerous times. I am adding a summary of a lot of the problems and solutions in this post for reference. I can also update it over time if we need it.

Problem: Mail App crashes after my update.
Solution: This is caused by the sync of the backup from iTunes. The permissions on the mail folder are incorrect (it’s owned by root). The easiest fix is to run bossprefs, click more, and click “fix user dir permissions”. You may need to reboot.

Solar Powered iPhone 3G Case

Doug and I had been discussing a few days ago how quickly the iPhone 3G’s battery goes dead…I will say, with confidence, that the first gen iPhone’s battery life is much better than the iPhone 3G’s battery life!! Well, the next day, Doug sent me a link to a solar powered iPhone 3G case! It seems that the guys over at Mobile Fun feel our pain and have developed a case that can recharge your iPhone 3G using direct sunlight. According to Solar Feeds, it will take around 3 hours to charge the battery on your iPhone 3G to a level in which your iPhone can function. It would take around 10 hours to fully charge your iPhone 3G. It also comes with a mini USB option in case you do not have any direct sunlight. Overall, [Read more…]

AppStore Apps Crashing – Restore

AppStore It has been a few days since I have been able to catch up on iPhone news, as those of you who follow Doug or my Twitter know (ahhyeah and bporter), I’m not feeling well lately! Well today, I was taking a look at the list of 25 top free apps and was suprised to see one that I was very familiar with…Earth3D. Well, I installer Earth3D however, when I went to open it, it just crashed back to the SpringBoard. So, I decided to go try another application…which crashed as well. This is on my personal iPhone (not one of our test iPhones) so, it only has the AppStore and is not jailbroken. I did notice that I was having some issues last night while recording our video podcast but didn’t think anything of it. Well, it seems that ALL my AppStore apps are crashing, not a single app will stay open. So, after trying a few fixes, wishing my iPhone was jailbroken so I had SSH access and finally giving up…I ended up restoring. And like Doug, will be jailbreaking my 2.0.1 firmware using WinPwn 2.0.0.4. I’m curious to know if anyone else has had this problem and if you were able to fix it or ended up restoring.

WinPwn 2.0.0.4 Released

WinPwn 2.0.0.4 has been released. This will jailbreak firmware 2.0.1. Firmware 2.0.1 has some good upgrades that speed up the iPhone and keep the iPhone from crashing so much. The 2.0.1 firmware upgrades the modem firmware and has not been unlocked yet.

iOlympics

Available In: Safari       Price: Free

iOlympicsolympicsLast night the opening events for the 2008 Olympics was amazing! It got me thinking that there had to be some apps out there for the iPhone that would update you on Olympic news, scores and schedules. The first one I’ve found, and best so far, is a web app called iOlympics. It first opens up with a countdown as to how many days are left of the Olympic Games. Next there are 7 choices: News, Today’s Events, Event Schedule, TV Viewing Schedule, Medal Tracker, Sports and Countries.

News covers Olympic news from NBC, BBC, Yahoo, and USA Today. There is also a Most Popular News, Team USA News and a Special Features section. [Read more…]

Doom for the iPhone Progress

doomI thought I would post some screenshots of the progress of Doom over time. It seems it won’t be in the App Store via this developer but will run on 2.0. Besides Wolfenstein 3D, Doom was one of the first games I played on a PC (minus all the GWBASIC games). Now these screenshots come from the work that Steven, developer of Speed, MobileNuker and current developer of Lights Off, and not that of John Carmack and Todd Hollenshead of ID Software who are the original developers of the game, although they would like to get both Doom and Wolfenstein 3D onto the iPhone. They’ve even been heard to be looking for an App Store publisher to work with to get the game out there. Hmm, maybe Steve better give them a call! One way or the other, it is on it’s way! Here’s the screenshots: [Read more…]

iXboxLive 1.0

Available In: App Store       Price: $0.99

iXboxLiveDeveloped by Nicholas Pike, the developer of MobileTwitter, iXboxLive has been added to the App Store. We reviewed this app back in April when it was available through Installer (you can still get it in Installer for firmware 1.1.4 and below). The icon has changed to more of a typical square icon rather than the original circle although design has stayed the same.

You can add friends by taping the edit button and then the plus button. Just type in their gamer tag and tap “Add to my local list”. It would be so awesome if you could put your gamertag in and it would pull all your friends at once. Not sure if the Xbox API supports this though. On your main list of friends you see their avatar, gamertag and last seen on date.
