iPhone 3G Unlock Progress?

Dev TeamAs we were traveling today, we learned that the Dev Team had some new info about the progress of the iPhone 3G unlock. We are finally settled for the night so, I thought I would let you know what the Dev Team has posted on their blog today. Though they have made progress, they still do not have any estimation on when there will be a software unlock available for the iPhone 3G.

“Here’s a screenshot of a 3G iPhone whose baseband has been modified. And even though it’s modified — and fails the integrity check — it’s still running. Can you guess where the patch was made?

PdaNet – iPhone Tethering Application

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

PdaNetI finally got some time to go on vacation so I thought I would try out PdaNet. It’s an application that shares your cellular internet connection to your laptop via Wifi. Note that I’m on a PC running Windows XP. I’m not sure the process for Vista or Mac.

First, install the app from Cydia. Then change your wifi connection on your laptop to adhoc. To do this right click on your wireless connection in the task bar down by the clock, then select “View Available Wireless Connections”. Then on the left click “Change Advanced Settings”. Another window will open; select the “Wireless Networks” tab and then the “Advanced” button. Here you will change to adhoc connection. This will allow you to connect your iPhone’s wifi directly to your laptop without a router. [Read more…]

WinterBoard Mods

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard There were are quite a few mods via Steffwiz’s Source in Cydia today. I thought I would touch on a few of them. I just had a person email me yesterday asking if I knew of any SMS bubbles that were available in Cydia and then today there were some! Steffwiz has released both Purple and Auqa SMS bubbles. I know there are more than that in Cydia but, for the life of me I can’t remember the titles of the packages. If you know of any…let me know in the comments.

TextGuru 1.0.7 and 1.1 Preview

Available In: App Store       Price: $4.99

TextGuruTextGuru is a pretty sweet text editor. It included features like cut, copy and paste within the app. It can also read Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files along with PDFs. Don’t be mistaken like others, this app only READS the previously named file types, but does not edit them.

What’s nice is you can install a program on your computer from their download page that allows synchronization of documents to your iPhone. This works with OSX Leopard or Tiger and Windows Vista or XP. [Read more…]

mophie Juice Pack for the iPhone 3G

I was totally stoked when I was checking out our News page (which Doug updates) and saw that mophie is working on their Juice Pack for the 3G iPhone! The Juice Pack is a really nice, sleek, battery extender for the iPhone and iPod Touch. There are a ton of great features with the Juice Pack but one of the nicest features is that you can still plug your iPhone into your computer while the Juice Pack is on via mini USB (which is provided when you purchase a Juice Pack). This allows you to sync and charge both your iPhone and/or the Juice Pack while it is on your iPhone.

Another thing I noticed is that they have stepped up the performance a little from the Juice Pack for the First Gen iPhone giving you even more battery life for the iPhone 3G. However, the price has not changed. The Juice Pack for the iPhone 3G is $99.95 and is available for pre-order. They start shipping the product on October 30th…just in time for the Holidays!!

Extended Preferences 1.0

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Extended Preferences Extended Preferences is an application that adds additional functionality to your Settings options. When you install Extended Preferences, it will be added to WinterBoard. You will need to go into WinterBoard and select it in order to activate the app. Once you have selected Extended Preferences in WinterBoard, you can go into your stock Settings application to see all the features it has added.

Some of the additional features are obvious such as a Usage option added just below your Wallpaper option. The Usage option displays the Time since last full charge, Call Time and Cellular Network Data. Another obvious addition is the SpringBoard option which allows you to turn on/off Show Internal Apps, Show YouTube and App Reveal Mode. It also always you to turn on/off Fake Signal Bars (for iPod Touches) and Fake Time. The Fake Time and Fake Carrier options allow you to overwrite the stock Time and Carrier with your own custom info. You are also able to turn on/off Numeric Battery and WiFi. I love these options! If turned on, they allow you to tap your battery or WiFi icons to get the percentages.

How to take a Screenshot of your iPhone’s Lock Screen

AiS Ok, for the longest time I have not been able to figure out how to easily take a screenshot of my lock screen on my iPhone. Honestly, I was hoping we would see Capture updated for the 2.x firmware but since it has not happened yet I decided I better try a different method (though, I am still hoping to see Capture!)! Here is what I figured out…ok, Doug actually told me about it! :) Either way, below are step-by-step instructions on how to take a screenshot of your lock screen on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

1. Installer UIKits Tools via Cydia

WinterBoard Themes – KillSignRetroBlue and Ironman

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard There have been a couple themes in WinterBoard recently that I think are note worthy. The themes are KillSignRetroBlue and Ironman. Both of themes have quite a bit of modding in them. The KillSignRetroBlue theme includes icons (though the YouTube icon does not work…you will have to manually SSH in and capitalize the “Y” in YouTube icon…then it will work), custom battery, HUD, Closebox, badge and sliders.

The Ironman theme does a ton of modding as well…lock screen, wallpaper, battery, sms balloons, slider, weather screen, sounds, load screens, dialer….etc. Honestly, I’m not huge on theme Themes (and this one is a little on the boyish side :)) but, I got word that this was cool so I thought I would pass it along! Check out the screenshots below. [Read more…]

“Where To?” Application to be Sold, Company Splitting Up

Available In: App Store       Price: $2.99

Where To?It seems the developers of “Where To?” are splitting up. They are also splitting up their apps amongst themselves like “Tipulator”, “I’m Here” & “Groceries” along with apps that are still in development. However, “Where To?” will soon be auctioned off to the highest bidder. As of the writing of this article I was unable to find the application “Where To?” in the App Store. Here is an excerpt from their blog:

It’s been a pretty long time since our last post. For good reason… I’m just going to get to the point and let everyone know that we’re in the process of splitting up tap tap tap. [Read more…]

Pocket Elf – Keep Track of Holiday Spending

Available In: App Store       Price: $1.99

Pocket Elf Pocket Elf is an application that allows you to keep track of your Holiday spending! I know, it might still be a little early (though, I have already asked for my families Christmas Lists!!), but if you are looking for a way to keep yourself on budget this Holiday season this might just be the app for you. It comes from a developer that many of you may be familiar with. Skylar has also developed PocketTouch, a jailbroke application.

Pocket Elf allows you to set a budget, create a list of friends, assign gifts to your friends (including the amount paid for each gift) and create a list of possible gifts. When you first open the application, you will be on the Budget screen. Here you are able to set your budget and then choose how you would like the budget displayed. The default display is how much of your budget you have spent. The Long Budget Display allows you to see how much of your you have spent so far and what your total budget is. Showing Remaining will display the amount of money still left in your budget. I personally like to turn on both the Long Budget Display and the Show Running options. [Read more…]

MusicPlayer Mod – WinterBoard

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WinterBoard The MusicPlayer 8 Colours mod in Cydia is a mod that changes the color scheme of your iPod. There are eight colors to choose from; Yellow, Silver, Red, Pink, Green, Gold, Blue and Black. It actually is a pretty decent mod. Most themes do not mod the iPod so this could give your current theme a little boost. The only thing I do not like about the mod is that it changes you iPod icon which will overwrite your current theme’s iPod icon. However, you can fix this by moving your theme above the MusicPlayer mod in WinterBoard. Check out the screenshots below.

RailWater 1.0

Available In: cydia       Price: Free

RailWater is actually a very fun game of strategy. The object of the game is to add the correct pipes joints to move the water through all the pipes and at the same time have all the numbers match. When you open RailWater you will get a splash screen and then the main menu. On the main menu, there are two options; Play and Help. Help is actually in a different language so unless you speak Italian (I don’t actually know if it is Italian! :) ) the Help will not help you much. Once you select Play you will be on the main play screen. Here you will notice an upper menu bar and a lower menu bar. On the upper menu you have the level you are on, the amount of time that has passed, the option to go back to the main menu, restart that level and turn the sound on/off.
