LCD Clock – Display Time, Date and Calendar

Available In: App Store       Price: $0.99

LCD Clock Whenever I get bored, I usually take a trip to the App Store and do some window shopping, preferably strolling down the free aisles of the store. One app that often showed up in the Top 25 was a utility that acted as a clock display and alarm clock. I never downloaded the app since I didn’t really find a need for the program. However, LCD Clock came up as an assignment, so I finally got to see what all the fuss was about with these clock/alarm utilities.

Overview
With LCD clock, you basically get a digital clock, date, and calendar display. The screen can be turned so that only the clock is displayed. Settings (most of which are found in the iPhone settings) for LCD clock go beyond the expected multiple colored displays. For the clock display, you can choose 24-hour or 12-hour (AM/PM). The date can be displayed with the year, month, or date first. For the calendar display, you can view up to 7 months of dates and choose to have holidays highlighted along with Sundays. [Read more…]

iFood Assistant – Recipes, Photos and Instructional Videos

Available In: App Store       Price: $0.99

iFood Assistant It’s hard at times to choose my favorite hobby. Technology or Food. Gadgets or Gourmet. iPhone or Chocolate Lava Cake. Well, with iFood Assistant, my two loves are merged into one $0.99 app. Ever since I purchased the iPhone, I’ve been on the lookout for a solid native app that would allow me to search recipes, save favorites in a recipe box, and create a shopping list or better yet, integrate with my lists on Remember the Milk. Unfortunately, the search continues (BigOven is the closest so far), even after this attempt from iFood Assistant.

Overview
With iFood Assistant, you can browse recipes, take suggestions for dinner, and view cooking videos. In addition, with a login to kraftfoods.com, you can add items to your shopping list from recipes, as well as store favorites into an online recipe box. If you have a particular idea of what you’re looking for, the search function is available, or you can just roll the dice with the Recipe of the Day. Under the “more” button is a settings menu as well as a grocery store locator. [Read more…]

Lock Calendar – Display Calendar Events on Lock Screen

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Lock Calendar Lock Calendar is a simple application that allows you to display your upcoming calendar events on your lock screen. I know there are a few other applications that also allow for this functionality on firmware 2.x (IntelliScreen, RemindYou) however, both are paid applications. Lock Calendar is free. When you install Lock Calendar, your events will automatically start to display on your lock screen…you do not turn the app on via WinterBoard. It will display your next ten upcoming events. The events are categorized by date and also display the time and title of the event. The app has a decent design and showed up nicely on all the wallpapers that I tested. [Read more…]

SweetTooth – Bluetooth Stumbler

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

SweetTooth SweetTooth is a simple bluetooth stumbler application. When you open SweetTooth, it will scan for any Bluetooth devices in range. When it is finished scanning, it will display a list of all the devices that it has found (if it does not find any, the list will be blank). You can also have it rescan for devices by selecting Rescan in the upper right corner. That is basically it. It doesn’t seem like you can select a device from the list in the application and pair it to your iPhone. However, this is slightly difficult for me to test because the headset I tested was already paired to my device. So, as far as I can tell, it just gives you a list of local Bluetooth devices. However, I did notice in the package description that they are going to be adding more features to the app later. Let me know in the comments if I missed any functionality of the current version of this application (2.0.0-1). [Read more…]

iDownload – Download and share files directly from your iPhone or iPod Touch

Available In: App Store       Price: $0.99

iDownload I must admit that I’ve had this app on my iPhone for a while now, and I had been putting off writing the review. Honestly, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with this app, and I wanted to make sure I explored all of the possible uses before I made my final opinions. First, the most obvious use for this application is to allow one to download files directly onto the iPhone. I haven’t had much use for this. For one, the iPhone does not have a built-in method for accessing files as my previous Windows Mobile devices did. There’s no “My Computer” to be found (thankfully) on my iPhone home screen. Thus, I’ve never been tempted to download and store any files on my iPhone. If I needed to look at a file, the iPhone usually took care of this by opening the PDF, Word, or Excel document and that was that.

Overview
With iDownload, you are able to download files directly to your iPhone, as well as share files with any web-enabled device. This is supposed to be two-way, so files can be transferred both to and from the iPhone. Although the instructions on the website state that it would be “easy as 1, 2, 3”, I decided to put each function to the test. My results follow below: [Read more…]

craigsphone – A Free Craigslist iPhone App

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

craigsphoneI’ve looked into a craigs list app for the iPhone before but the only one I could find cost $2.99. Gizmodo wrote about craigsphone today so I thought I’d check it out. The first thing that bugs me about this app is that you can’t view listings by their category in the for sale section. It’s all mixed together. You also have to be careful when you’re looking at an item and want to go back, you have to wait for the for sale button to load. Otherwise, if you do it too fast, the browse button is still there and it takes you all the way back to the first login screen.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of good features to this app. First that it’s free, then the sweet icon. There’s lots of other categories than just “for sale” like housing , jobs, resumes, etc. You can create a new post right from your iPhone. It looks like they’re working on a nearby feature but there’s a warning that says, “Nearby features currently work only in the SF Bay Area and Manhattan.” And finally, something to remember. If you’re going to create a post on your iPhone you have to upload the images first under the account tab. [Read more…]

TimeTable – Keep Track of your Class Schedule

Available In: App Store       Price: $0.99

TimeTable TimeTable is an application that allows you to keep track of your class schedule. It also allows you to keep track of the room number, teacher, whether you have a test in a class, the homework that is due in a class or any other notes you have for a class. Class schedule applications are allows a little ify for me. Everyone tends to like to keep track or their schedule/assignments in a very particular way. But, if you are looking for a way to do just that, you might want to take a look at TimeTable.

When you first open the application, you will get a pop-up giving you a few instructions about that application. Basically, you will need to set up the application in order to use it. So, once you are past the pop-up, you will see a lower menu bar with five options. The two arrows will move you through the days once they are set-up. WootWatch Update

WootWatchThe update promised by the developer has been released and WootWatch works again! Woot.com had changed some code on their site which ’caused the WootWatch app to become inoperable. The developer pushed an emergency update to correct the problem.

WootWatch Fix/Update Coming Soon

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

WootWatchDuring a recent Woot-Off on Woot.com my WootWatch app stopped working. I contacted the developer and got the following response:

Dear WootWatch user,

Yes, the app stopped working on Thursday morning. This started when woot.com made a change to their page that broke WootWatch’s processing logic. In my defense, the change they made was technically a coding error on their part (they inserted a non-permitted XML character), but although that makes me feel better, it doesn’t help you get your daily Woot fix.

I’ve submitted a patch to the App Store that would work around this problem. You’ll see it as version 1.4.2.1, and it will be available for download as soon as Apple approves the submission.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

PS: I can’t believe they changed their code in the middle of a Woot-Off. Yikes!

Great News! We’ll let you know when the update is released. If you’ve never heard of Woot or WootWatch, check out this review: WootWatch for Today’s Woot-Off!

Target Application – Easy and Fun Way to Find Gift Ideas!

Available In: App Store       Price: Free

Target Ok, I might be slightly bias about this application because I love Target and do a ton of shopping there but, I really like their new application! It is basically an application that gives you gift ideas based on a person’s gender and age.

When you open the app, you will get a nice loading screen and then the main screen (with some cheery jiggle bells that only last a second or two). Ok, from here you will notice the option to choose whether the person you are choosing a gift for is male or female and then you can slide the age bar until you have the age range that person falls into. Once you have selected the gender and age of the person, give your iPhone a little shake. This will bring up a gift suggestion. It will display the title of the gift and the cost of the gift. If it looks like a gift you would like to consider, tap the screen. This will bring up a menu with the options to; add that gift to your favorites, find that gift at a Target store, buy the gift at Target.com, start your search over and Cancel.
