HandicApp – Removed from Community Sources

HandicApp BigBoss has written an article warning of the dangers of using HanidcApp. Due to these dangers, iSpazio has removed the application from Community Source. Below the warning via BigBoss:

See original article and comments HERE.

Here are the dangers of this app. First off, all packages have permissions pre-set by the packager prior to going into Installer or Cydia. So this app is totally unneeded. Worse, it changes these permissions and you can never get them back without using SSH and having the knowledge to do so. Secondly, iPhone follows Unix file permission standards. This means all normal files must be 644 permissions. Only binary executable files should be 755 and in some special cases 4755 with owner set as root. This app stomps all over these proper permissions and just recursively sets every file to 755 in the entire folder! [Read more…]

Weather.com

Weather.comWeather.com has had an iPhone version of their site for quite a while now (Oct 07) but news is slowing just before the iPhone 3G launch so I thought I’d catch up on some old apps, in this case web apps, that got skipped. This will also allow new iPhone 3G owners to see things others may already know about. Finally, this will also add to our web apps category that isn’t very full right now. I haven’t been a big fan of web apps but there are some really great ones now and they are worth writing about.

Please send me links to your favorite web apps via our contact form on the about page and we’ll share them with everyone. Now, on to the Weather.com web app review:

The link for the iPhone is weather.com/iphone. Going to weather.com will still take you to the full site. The first thing you do is add your location. You can do this by tapping in your zip code or city’s name. You may add up to 5 locations.

There are three main choices at the bottom: Today, Maps, and Forecast. [Read more…]

iRemember 1.0

iRemember iRemember is an application that allows Safari to retain cookies. I honestly cannot explain this application better than the developer does. So, here it is, “iRemember will fix the issue of websites constantly asking for login by enabling Cookies in Safari.” More in-depth description – “iRemember is an utility that will fix the Safari Cookies on 1.1.4 firmware (and possibly 1.1.3), for some iPhone setups. In fact after having closed Safari, it’ll keep asking you to login again….To fix it we only need to run a command called “chown.” And this is exactly what iRemember does. The own will change from “root” to “mobile” and Safari will save your cookies and will not continuously ask to log into the same website.” [Read more…]

PocketTouch 1.4.1se

PocketTouch The update to version 1.41se of PocketTouch “pays more attention to the way it looks.” I’m not exactly sure what that means but, I did notice the that transition from the Information menu to the main screen has changed…I like it, it makes me laugh. Try it…I guarantee it will make you smile! I also noticed a two other small visual changes; when you pause a song, the play icon is no longer displayed at the top and when you are in the menu the song and artist are displayed at the bottom of the screen. Though, those could have been there before and I jsut didn’t notice them! Skylar, let me know in the comments if I missed something. PocketTouch is available through the BigBoss source.

HandicApp 1.13

HandicApp HandicApp is an application that allows you to easily set permissions of applications. When you open the application, you will get a splash screen. From there you will be brought to a welcome page. The Info button in the upper right corner will just tell you that HandicApp is a Permissions setting Utility. To change the permissions of an application, tap the Select button in the upper left corner. This will bring up a list of all the applications installed on your iPhone. If you select an application, you will get a menu with three options; Cripple (644), Heal (755) and Cancel. I tested setting the permissions of an application to both 644 and 755 and both work. When I changed the permissions of an application to 644, when I opened the app, it just closed back to the SpringBoard (which is supposed to happen). When I changed the permissions back to 755, [Read more…]

BossPrefs 1.72 & 1.73

BossPrefs The update to version 1.72 of BossPrefs “adds ability to sort all the dock icons including the built in apps. Hopefully, this should close all issues with the dock display as well with small numbers of icons.” I think ability to sort all the applications in the dock, including Power and Poof, is good. I also noticed the the Power and Poof icons are no longer automatically added to the dock instead, you can add them if you would like. However, I can’t seem to get them onto the dock. They can both be toggled in the Config menu but, [Read more…]

Euro2008 1.7.1

Euro2008 There have been a few update to Euro2008 (1.7 and 1.7.1) since the last time I did a review of the app. There are a few visible changes to the application. First off, Esperanto has been added to the list of available languages. I also noticed that Google Ads have been added to both the Live Results and Score sections. The Score section also gives you a quick view of the results. I also noticed a few minor changes to the English menu (though, these could be from a previous version). A few of the menu options have been renamed… [Read more…]

aMaze The update to aMaze version 1.2.3 fixes a few bugs and improves the UI. There are no visual changes to the application so, the maybe the improvements to the UI have to do with the accelerometer settings. Maze is available through the Ste Packaging source.

Summize – Twitter Search

Summize I just realized that I have never done a review of a very cool, highly addicting, website. Summize.com is a website, very nicely optimized for the iPhone, that allows you to search Twitter for Keywords. When you go to Summize.com on your iPhone, you will be brought to the main page in which you can enter a keyword. There is also an Advanced Search option that allows for a much more specific search. In the Advanced search, you can search for specific words or phrases, people, twitters near you, twitters that include a :), :) or ?, twitters containing links and you can choose the number of results you would like to display on the results page. Whether you are just entering a keyword in the quick search or using the advanced Search… [Read more…]

Chain 3 – App Store Game

Chain 3 is a game that will be avilable via the App Store, on the launch day. It kind of reminds me of a cross between Bejeweled type games (iZoo, Gemlogic)and Trism. There is no indication on how much the game will cost. Below is a demo video.

LadyBug SMS Mod

This is a unique SMS mod. When installed, it will add ladybugs, leaves and cherries to you SMS bubbles. Your SMS messages will have a ladybug and cherries…the reply SMS messages will have a ladybug and a leaf. I know, it is girly but…girls do own iPhones!! :) Also, I had no issue installing or uninstalling this application. When I install it, the mod showed-up…when I uninstalled it, it went back to stock. Simple and easy. The LadyBug SMS mod is avilable through the Planet-iPhones source.

Note: when you install this mod, it will remove you custom chat bubbles…at least it did for me, mine where added via Customize.
