WeatherIcon Update – Supports 3.0 Firmware *UPDATE WARNING

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

WeatherIcon The WeatherIcon mod (a mod that allows the current temperature and weather conditions to be displayed on your weather icon) has been updated to version 2.1.2 which allows it to work on the 3.0 firmware. The status bar part of the mod still is not working on 3.0 but, at least the icon part of the mod is!

When I first installed WeatherIcon, on my iPhone running 3.0, it went into safe mode. I restarted the SpringBoard again, as prompted by the safe mode pop-up, and it worked fine. The same thing happened when I updated the mod on an iPhone running 2.2 firmware as well (safe mode, restarted, worked fine).

Sleep to Lock – Go to Lock Screen via the Sleep Button

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Sleep to Lock Sleep to Lock is an application that changes your sleep button (that is the Power button on the top of your device) so that when it is tapped, instead of putting your iPhone or iPod Touch into Sleep mode, it brings it to the Lock Screen. This is a code application so, when you install it, there will not be an icon on your SpringBoard…it just automatically makes the change once installed. To remove the mod, you will need to uninstall it via Cydia. [Read more…]

Apple Changes iPhone 3G S to iPhone 3GS

I can not tell you how happy it makes me to see that Apple is quietly (yes, quietly) changing the name of the iPhone 3G S to the iPhone 3GS. I have actually been watching this for a couple of days now. It started with their Press Releases and News Headlines. I was waiting until they made changes on their actual website before writing anything. Last night, they finally changed their iPhone 3GS information page to say iPhone 3GS instead of iPhone 3G S. WunderMap – Fullscreen Radar Web App

I’ve had a bunch of people ask me lately how I got this full screen weather map on my iPhone so I thought I’d share it with you all. First, it’s a web app. Don’t be scared, it’s still really nice. Go to http://i.wund.com from your iPhone and pic the city you want the radar to start on. You can either search for it or Safari should ask if the app can use your current location. Once you do that, scroll down to the radar option and click on “View Full Screen WunderMap” located just under the radar image. Once this screen is open, tap the plus sign at the botton of the webpage. Tap “Add to Home Screen” and rename it to “Radar” or something short.

The kewl think about this map is that you can pinch and zoom just like Google Maps. You can zoom way out to see the whole country or way in down to county and city levels. You can also tap “Options” in the top right corner of the site to turn on animation and severe weather overlays and change to different Satellite views. [Read more…]

Stack Coming to 3.0 With More Features! *Updated*

StackThe developer of Stack, Steve Troughton-Smith, has been posting lots of info about the upcoming version of Stack for 3.0. The big feature here is multiple stacks. Sounds like you’ll be able to do as many as you want. The stacks will also act like icons so you can drag them around just like normal icons. If you want to test out Stack you can do it now if your iPhone is jailbroken and running firmware 3.0. Just visit steventroughtonsmith.com/stack to download and get install info. Eventually there will be a full release in Cydia when it’s finished.

I’ve also added some screenshots below to an example of Stack 2.2 with a theme applied. [Read more…]

Five-Column SpringBoard Update – Supports 3.0 Firmware

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free

Five-Column SpringBoard Today the Five-Column SpringBoard (FCSB) mod was updated to version 0.57 (and 0.57-1). The update does a few cool things; it makes the mod compatible with both 2.2.x and 3.0 firmware and it also moves the enable/disable toggle into the stock Setting application instead of creating an icon on the SpringBoard…which I really like! Below is the the change log for both the 0.57 and the 0.57-1 updates.

To toggle the FCSB mod, just open your stock Settings application and select the Five-Column SB option. You can then choose to enable or disable the mod. Which ever you do, it will respring your SpringBoard. I had no problem when I tested the update on firmware 3.0…it worked perfectly. You can get the FCSB mod via the Ste Packaging source. Here you will need to enter your Facebook info (email address and password). Once you have finished entering your info, you will then need to select the Grant Permission option. What Exactly Does Spotlight Search?

Spotlight Search I know there are mixed feelings about the new search feature of the 3.0 firmware, Spotlight. Some people love it, some people hate it! I have even had people ask me how to get rid of it (you can’t – at least not yet). Either way, many people are a little confused on what exactly Spotlight searches. Below is a list of exactly what is searched by Spotlight. [Read more…]

##ICON_NAME## About two months ago, Doug wrote about an application called iTunnel3D. He liked the game so much that he said it was right up there with his favorite game FieldRunners. It seems that the developers are finally ready to launch the app in the App Store. They recently submitted a lite version of the game called iTunnel 3D Lite to Apple. I was able to get my hands on a demo of it and it is totally sweet! They will also be submitting a full version of the app called iTunnel 3D Classic. Below are the features of both the lite and the full version of the app. [Read more…]

More Info on Push Notifications

Push NotificationsThe push notifications feature is slowly being released by Apple. Today, both AIM and BeeJive released updates with push notification. It’s great. Right now I have AIM and AP Mobile using the push service and it works great. Even when my iPhone is locked and put away for a while, it pops right up with a noise and message. Very nice. I find something very very important missing from the feature. First, here’s what Apple has to say in it’s “iPhone User Guide”.

This setting appears when you’ve installed an application from the App Store that uses
the Apple Push Notification service.

Push notifications are used by applications to alert you of new information, even when the application isn’t running. Notifications differ depending upon the application, but may include text or sound alerts, and a numbered badge on the application’s icon on the Home screen.

You can turn notifications off if you don’t want to be notified or want to conserve battery life.

Turn all notifications on or off: Tap Notifications and turn notifications on or off. Turn sounds, alerts, or badges on or off for an application: Tap Notifications, then choose an application from the list and choose the types of notification you want to turn on or off.

Now for the missing part. More feature rich notification controls. Right now you can turn on and off the badge, sound and pop ups individually. That’s awesome! But what if I don’t want people IMing me at 3:00am or don’t want news alerts all weekend. I think there needs to be a time control Facebook and Twitter already do this for my text messaging. It’s great! Off at 11:00pm and on at 7:00am. What is Apple’s solution to this? You might think, “Just turn it of when you go to bed”. Well, I don’t want to do that, because what if there is some weather app someday that I have notifications turned on when there is a tornado warning. I’ll want to hear that when I’m sleeping. iPhone 3GS Disassemble and Repair Video

##ICON_NAME## Directfix.com recently posted a video on how to disassemble and repair an iPhone 3GS. If you are the fix-it type and you break your touch screen or you want to replace your battery or LCD…here are step-by-step instructions on how to do that! I honestly would never try this (Doug might) but, it is interesting to watch.

I also found that if you are willing to give it a shot, you can purchase the touch screen (IP-2320) and the LCD (IP-2321) for $69.99 each on their website. Below is the video demo.
